The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), the research and analysis division of The Economist Group, presented its Global Livability Index 2024 on Wednesday, where Calgary ranks as the fifth most livable city in the world, tied with Geneva, Switzerland.
Calgary was the highest-ranked North American city, surpassing Vancouver, which ranked seventh.
“I appreciate the global recognition,” said Calgary Mayor Jyoti Gondek on Thursday. “We have a prosperous economy, a beautiful arts and culture sector, not to mention sports. There are many things we love about this city.”
The EIU report ranks the livability of 173 cities based on stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure.
Vienna, Austria (98.4), ranks first, followed by Copenhagen, Denmark (98.0); Zurich, Switzerland (97.1); and Melbourne, Australia (97.0).
“This year, Vienna once again scored perfect 100 in four out of five categories, although its score in culture and environment was 93.5, due to the absence of major sporting events,” the report said.
Calgary scored 96.8 on the index, with high scores in all five categories, including:
- Stability: 100;
- Healthcare: 100;
- Culture and environment: 90;
- Education: 100;
- Infrastructure: 96.4.
These high scores have helped Calgary rise to the fifth position on the list, up from seventh in 2023.
“Calgary’s ranking as the most livable city in North America is a testament to the high quality of life and opportunities in our city. We can see it in the record number of people moving to Calgary and coming here to build a life and career,” said Geraldine Anderson, Vice President of Marketing, Communications, Strategy, and Strategic Partnerships at Calgary Economic Development in a statement.
“We are pleased to see Calgary climb the ranks this year and the world taking note of the exciting things happening in our city.”
